Value is not the same as cheapest. A good value car gives you the features, safety, efficiency and warranty you need for a fair price, and does not cost a fortune to run. With intense competition from Chinese brands and a wave of year-end offers, there are more genuinely good value new cars in Australia than ever.

This shortlist covers cars from about $20,000 drive-away to mid-size hybrid SUVs. Every price was checked on the manufacturer's own Australian website or media release on 2 November 2026. Drive-away prices include stamp duty, registration and dealer delivery, while prices before on-road costs do not, so the two are kept separate throughout. To understand the difference, read our guide to on-road costs and drive-away versus list price.

Many of these prices are time-limited offers. Check the end date in the table and confirm with a dealer, because offers can end early or change by state.

BYD Atto 1

The Atto 1 Essential is the cheapest new electric car on our list at $19,990 drive-away under BYD's offer for orders between 15 September and 15 December 2026, with delivery by 31 December 2026. Metallic paint costs extra. It suits city drivers who can charge at home and want the lowest running costs. Compare it with its bigger sibling in our BYD Atto 1 versus Atto 2 guide, and note a next-generation Atto 1 has been revealed.

MG3

The MG3 offers two routes to good value. The petrol Vibe is $19,990 drive-away and the Excite Hybrid+ is $27,490 drive-away under MG's offer, which ends on 31 December 2026. The usual Hybrid+ Excite drive-away price is $28,990. The hybrid is one of the most fuel-efficient cars sold here. MG's warranty conditions are explained in our MG 10-year warranty guide.

Kia Picanto

The Picanto Sport automatic has a drive-away estimate from $23,390 for November 2026, while the GT-Line automatic is from $25,190. It is the smallest car here but comes with Kia's long warranty and a strong safety assist list. It is a good fit for first-car buyers and P-platers.

Chery Tiggo 4

For buyers who want an SUV on a tight budget, the Tiggo 4 Urban is $23,990 drive-away, and Chery is adding a $1,500 fuel card until 21 December 2026. The Ultimate is $26,990 drive-away. See the wider lineup in our Chery range guide.

MG ZS

The ZS Vibe is $22,990 drive-away and the more efficient Excite Hybrid+ is $28,990 drive-away under MG's offer until 31 December 2026. The hybrid adds a lot of efficiency for the money, as covered in our MG ZS Hybrid+ report.

Suzuki Swift Hybrid

The Swift Hybrid is from $24,990 drive-away with a five-speed manual for purchases between 1 and 30 November 2026, and Suzuki quotes fuel use of 3.8L/100km. The Plus is from $29,490 drive-away and the GLX from $31,490. It suits drivers who want a simple, light and frugal hatch. See our list of the cheapest hatchbacks to run.

BYD Atto 2 DM-i

The Atto 2 DM-i Essential is $25,990 drive-away for orders from 24 September to 24 December 2026, which makes it the cheapest plug-in hybrid on sale. It can run on electricity for short trips and petrol for longer ones. Read our Atto 2 DM-i pricing report and our guide to running a plug-in hybrid without charging.

Geely EX2

The EX2 Complete is $26,490 before on-road costs and the Inspire is $30,990 before on-road costs, according to Geely Australia, and it has a five-star ANCAP rating. It is a strong alternative to the Atto 1 and Dolphin for buyers who want a full safety rating at a low price.

SOURCE CONFLICT. Geely publishes list prices, while dealer drive-away prices we saw ranged from about $28,990 to $30,100. Treat drive-away figures as indicative.

BYD Dolphin

The Dolphin Essential is $28,888 drive-away under BYD's offer for orders between 15 September and 15 December 2026. It offers more space and range than the Atto 1 for not much more money. BYD's running costs are covered in our BYD servicing costs guide.

Kia K4

The K4 S sedan or hatch has a drive-away estimate from $33,490, and Kia is offering $2,000 cashback on eligible vehicles purchased and delivered by 30 November 2026. The S with Safety Pack is $35,490. It is a roomy small car that suits families who do not want an SUV.

Toyota RAV4

The new-generation RAV4 GX 2WD hybrid was launched at $45,990 before on-road costs, according to Toyota Australia's November 2025 pricing announcement. It is not cheap, but it combines hybrid efficiency, strong resale and a long list of safety features for a mid-size SUV. Our RAV4 hybrid versus PHEV comparison explains the range, and the best hybrid and plug-in hybrid SUVs under $50,000 lists rivals.

Note. This is the launch list price. Toyota may have adjusted pricing since, so confirm with a dealer.

Other options worth considering

  • Kia Stonic. The S mild hybrid has a drive-away estimate from $29,990 for November 2026.
  • Chery Tiggo 7. The Urban is $29,990 drive-away with a $2,000 fuel card until 21 December 2026.
  • Toyota Corolla Hatch. The Ascent Sport Hybrid is listed at $32,110 before on-road costs in third-party pricing data, not confirmed on Toyota's site for this guide.
  • Chery Tiggo 4 Hybrid. A more efficient version of the Tiggo 4. Current drive-away pricing was not confirmed on Chery's offers page.

Coming soon

A larger, rear-drive next-generation BYD Atto 1 has been revealed but not yet priced for Australia. Kia's hybrid-only 2027 Seltos is due with a reported $39,990 drive-away starting price. Prices for both should be treated as unconfirmed until launch.

How we chose these cars

We started with cars priced up to about $50,000 and favoured those that offer strong standard equipment, low running costs, a long warranty or a sharp current offer. Prices were checked on each manufacturer's Australian offers page or media release on 2 November 2026. We did not include cars where we could not confirm a current price. For running costs, compare our guides to the cheapest cars to run, the cheapest new cars, new cars under $25,000 drive-away and the best cheap family cars.

Stamp duty and rego can add thousands to a list price, so check our guides to stamp duty on new cars by state and car rego cost by state. Electric car buyers should also read EV rebates and incentives by state.
