MG's first electric ute, the U9 EV, is now on sale in Australia. MG has priced it from $78,990 before on-road costs, and it went on sale on 29 October 2026. That puts it in the same price bracket as the Toyota HiLux BEV and well above the KGM Musso EV. What sets it apart is the spec sheet. It has dual motors with 325kW, a 102.2kWh battery, a 430km WLTP range and a 3500kg braked towing rating, which neither of those rivals can match.

MG says Australia is the first market in the world to get the U9 EV. It joins the diesel U9 in local showrooms and shares its body and tub with that model.

Price and what we know about drive-away cost

The confirmed figure is $78,990 before on-road costs, which is the price MG shows on its MG U9 EV model page. MG has not published a national drive-away price that we could verify. On-road costs vary by state, so the amount you pay will be higher than the list price. It's worth asking any dealer for a written drive-away quote. Buyers should also check whether a state EV incentive or stamp duty concession applies where they register the car, as these vary and change often.

The U9 EV comes with MG's seven-year warranty, conditional on servicing within the MG network. Our guide to MG warranty rules and servicing conditions explains how servicing affects cover across the brand. Buyers should confirm the U9 EV's battery warranty terms with MG before they sign.

Motors, battery and range

These figures come from the MG U9 EV specification sheet. The U9 EV pairs a 125kW and 250Nm front motor with a 200kW and 450Nm rear motor, for combined outputs of 325kW and 700Nm. MG claims 0 to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 190km/h.

The battery is a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack. MG quotes 430km of range on the WLTP lab test and energy use of 26.7kWh per 100km. Like every lab figure, that range is a guide, not a promise. Highway speed, cold weather, a loaded tub and roof racks will all cut it, and towing will cut it much harder. MG has not published a towing range figure.

ChargingPeak rateClaimed time
AC (home wallbox or public AC)11kW5 to 100 per cent in 12 hours
DC fast charging115kW20 to 80 per cent in 42 minutes

The 115kW DC peak is modest for a battery this size, so expect longer stops at ultra-fast chargers than some rivals with smaller packs. If you plan long trips, our guide to planning a highway trip on public chargers covers how to plan the stops.

Towing, payload and the GCM catch

MG rates the U9 EV to tow 3500kg braked and 750kg unbraked. Payload is 685kg, from a 3500kg GVM and a 2815kg kerb weight. The gross combination mass (GCM) is 6500kg.

MG's latest spec sheet doesn't list a maximum tow ball download, so confirm it with MG or a dealer before towing anywhere near 3500kg.

The GCM is the number tow-heavy buyers need to watch. This is our own calculation from MG's published figures, not an MG claim. If you tow a 3500kg trailer, the GCM leaves 3000kg for the ute itself. The ute weighs 2815kg empty, so that leaves about 185kg for the driver, passengers, gear in the tub and any accessories. In practice, two adults and a little gear could use up most of that margin. Buyers planning to tow a big caravan should weigh their real setup and work back from the 6500kg GCM.

Axle limits are 1600kg front and 2100kg rear. The tub floor is 1600mm long with 1230mm between the wheel arches.

Off-road hardware and practicality

  • Air suspension with double wishbones at the front and multilink at the rear
  • 230mm ground clearance unladen (185mm laden) and 550mm wading depth
  • 20-inch wheels on 275/55R20 tyres, with a full-size spare
  • 236-litre front boot (frunk) under the bonnet
  • 13.3-metre turning circle on a 3300mm wheelbase and 5500mm overall length
  • Seven drive modes on the spec sheet, including Tow, Snow and Off Road (the product page lists six, so check with MG)
  • Built-in scales to estimate the load you are carrying

Vehicle-to-load (V2L) power is a big draw for tradies and campers. The spec sheet lists 6.6kW through the charge port with an adapter, plus a 2.2kW outlet in the frunk and two 2.2kW outlets in the tub. An earlier MG release described these outlets as inside the cabin. We have used the specification sheet, but buyers should confirm the outlet positions in person.

Inside, the driver gets an eight-way electric seat with memory, heating, ventilation and massage, a 12.3-inch touchscreen and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. MG also offers Thule-branded accessories.

Safety rating

ANCAP has given the U9 EV a five-star rating with a 2024 datestamp. The rating is based on testing of the related Maxus eTerron 9, applies to vehicles built from May 2026 and expires in December 2031. Scores are 91 per cent for adult occupant protection, 89 per cent for child occupants, 84 per cent for vulnerable road users and 85 per cent for safety assist. Families should know that the rear centre seat has no top tether anchor, so it can't take a tethered child seat.

How the U9 EV compares with other electric utes

All prices below are as published by each brand. Two are before on-road costs and one is drive-away, and the range figures use different tests, so this isn't a like-for-like comparison.

KGM Musso EV$60,000 to $64,700 drive-awayUp to 419km (2WD)10 to 80 per cent in about 36 to 46 minutesUp to 2300kg

The HiLux BEV uses a 59.2kWh battery with 144kW, and its range figure is on the older NEDC test, which usually reads higher than WLTP. The U9 EV's battery is close to double that size. The KGM Musso EV undercuts both on price and offers up to 905kg payload, but it can't tow as much. Buyers who mainly tow heavy loads long distances may still be better served by a diesel or hybrid ute, and our ute buying hub lists the full range on sale.

What it means for buyers

The U9 EV gives electric ute buyers something they haven't had. It out-tows the HiLux BEV and Musso EV by a wide margin, has a battery over 100kWh and carries a full-size spare. If most of your driving is around town or on worksites with V2L, and you tow lighter trailers, the numbers stack up well.

If you tow a heavy caravan, the GCM limit and the likely drop in range while towing matter more than the headline towing figure. Charging stops will also be frequent on a long tow. Test the real-world range on a drive before you commit, and get a written drive-away quote.

What we don't know yet

  • A verified national drive-away price, and whether MG will run launch offers
  • Real-world range, both unladen and while towing
  • Servicing intervals and capped-price servicing costs for the EV
  • Battery warranty length and capacity terms, which MG should confirm
  • Local stock levels and delivery times

We will update this story once MG confirms these details. To see MG's other models, visit the MG range page.
