BYD has reached 150,000 deliveries in Australia, less than four years after its first cars arrived here in late 2022. The milestone car was a BYD Seal 6 Touring plug-in hybrid wagon, handed over on 21 October 2026 by BYD Warrnambool to a buyer from Portland in western Victoria.
The customer’s partner had bought a BYD Seal Performance only weeks earlier, making them a two-BYD household.
BYD sales in 2026
| Brand | Sales January to September 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota | 152,944 | Down 15.9 per cent |
| BYD | 76,614 | Up 102 per cent |
| Ford | 61,104 | Down 13.2 per cent |
BYD has sold 76,614 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, more than double the same period last year, and sits second in the market behind Toyota. In September it sold 8191 cars, up 61.1 per cent, and in June it set a record of 18,881 sales, just 243 short of Toyota for the month. The Sealion 7 was the fifth best-selling vehicle in September and the second most popular EV after the Tesla Model Y.
At this pace BYD could get close to 100,000 sales for the full year, but that has not been confirmed and depends on the final quarter.
A bigger dealer network
BYD expects to have more than 150 dealerships by the end of 2026. New sites include Noosaville, Mareeba and Moorooka in Queensland, Mudgee in NSW, Seymour in Victoria, the Barossa in South Australia and Rockingham in Western Australia. The brand says it now holds about 580,000 parts across its network, and its premium Denza brand has had about 3000 customers since February.
BYD chief operating officer Stephen Collins thanked customers and dealers for the result, saying the milestone shows how many Australians now trust the brand. For more on the range, see the BYD range, the BYD Seal and our story on the BYD Atto 2 DM-i from $25,990 drive-away.
