Toyota expands Kluger recall to 46,467 vehicles over second-row seatback defect
Toyota Australia has expanded a safety recall for the Toyota Kluger after Vehicle Recalls Australia updated campaign REC-006562 (campaign number 6GG11). The live government listing now covers 46,467 Kluger vehicles in the Australian market, with a year range of 2021 to 2025. Toyota Australia’s press notice, updated on 24 September 2026, says production now runs from 31 March 2021 to 10 June 2025 inclusive.
The defect sits in the second-row seat recliner. If the recliner teeth do not fully engage after seatback adjustment, the seatback may not stay locked. That can leave second-row occupants less well restrained in a higher-speed collision or hard braking. Toyota dealers will replace the seatback return springs in the recliner assembly free of charge. Allow about one hour, and remove child seats before the visit.
What Vehicle Recalls Australia lists
REC-006562 is a current Australian Government vehicle recall. The page names Toyota Motor Corporation Australia Limited as the supplier. Variants listed are Kluger 4x2 (GX, GXL, Grande), Kluger AWD (GX, GXL, Grande) and Kluger Hybrid (GX, GXL, Grande). A VIN list CSV is attached on the recall page for owners who want a file check as well as a dealer or helpline check.

The hazard wording on the government page is blunt. If the recliner is not fully engaged and the seatback moves in an accident or hard braking, the risk of injury or death to occupants can rise. Toyota’s own notice adds that there are no warning symptoms before the problem can occur, so a VIN check matters even when the seat feels fine today.
How the expansion changed the window
Toyota Australia says the first wave covered vehicles produced from 31 March 2021 through 10 November 2023. Investigations later confirmed the same condition on later builds, so the production end date moved to 10 June 2025. Toyota’s Q&A states the later cars were not confirmed at the time of the March 2026 recall. The expanded total is about 46,467 Australian-market vehicles.
VIN ranges in the Toyota notice cover petrol and hybrid Kluger codes, including AXUH78R hybrid and GSU70R, GSU75R, TXUA70R and TXUA75R petrol codes. Not every VIN inside a published range was sold here. Use the 17-digit VIN with a dealer or the helpline rather than guessing from the build year alone. Hybrid owners can start from the Kluger Hybrid model page, then confirm the VIN against the recall list.
What owners should do now
Toyota Australia will write to owners of involved vehicles. Do not wait on the letter if you drive a 2021-to-2025 Kluger and share the second row with children or adult passengers. Call your preferred Toyota dealer, or the Toyota Recall Campaign Helpline on 1800 987 366 (Toyota lists weekdays about 8am to 7pm AEST on the expansion notice), and quote the VIN.
Owner step | Detail |
|---|---|
Check the VIN | Dealer, Toyota recall tools, or the REC-006562 VIN CSV |
Book the remedy | Return-spring replacement, about one hour |
Before drop-off | Remove second-row child seats |
Cost | Free of charge when the vehicle is in the campaign |
Driving meantime | Toyota says you can keep driving, then book promptly |
Keep owner contact details current with Toyota so campaign mail and SMS can reach you. If a dealer says parts are waiting, ask for the campaign number 6GG11 to be logged against the VIN so you stay in the queue.
Do not confuse this with the seat-frame plug recall
Toyota Australia has also published a separate Kluger campaign about a second-row seat-frame mid-bar that may not meet a minimum radius rule. That older frame campaign uses a free plug on the mid-bar and a different vehicle count. REC-006562 is the recliner return-spring campaign. A single Kluger can sit in more than one recall over its life, so treat each campaign on its own VIN result.
Buyers comparing large Toyota SUVs can still weigh the current Kluger against the Toyota RAV4 and other models on the Toyota new-car index, but a used or stock Kluger from the 2021-to-2025 window needs a completed-recall check before handover. For wider running-cost context across petrol and hybrid SUVs, see the guide to petrol, hybrid and electric running costs.
Bottom line for Kluger owners
The official Australian facts are clear. REC-006562 now lists 46,467 vehicles, Toyota dates production from 31 March 2021 to 10 June 2025, and the free fix is a return-spring replacement in the second-row recliner. Confirm the VIN, book the work, and remove child seats before the appointment. That is the practical path for owners and for anyone buying a Kluger from this build window.
