The Volvo EX30 is one of the smallest SUVs in Volvo Australia's range and is designed as a compact entry point to the brand's fully electric vehicles. At 4,233mm long and 1,838mm wide excluding mirrors, it occupies less road and parking space than the EX40 while still providing five seats and the elevated seating position expected from a small SUV. Its minimalist design and centralised digital interface give it a distinctly modern character.

The current Australian specifications include two key electric powertrains. The P5 Long Range Electric uses rear-wheel drive and produces 200kW and 343Nm, with an advertised range of up to 462km and 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.3 seconds. The P8 AWD Electric adds a second driven axle and lifts output to 315kW and 543Nm. It can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 3.7 seconds, making it exceptionally quick for a compact SUV, while advertised range is up to 417km.

Both versions use a 69kWh nominal battery. Volvo lists an eight-hour 0-100 per cent charging time using a suitable three-phase 16A AC supply. At a compatible DC fast charger, the P5 can charge from 10 to 80 per cent in around 27 minutes, while the P8 is listed at approximately 28 minutes under the stated conditions. Actual charging time varies with battery temperature, charger output and other conditions.

Despite its compact exterior, the EX30 retains useful everyday carrying ability. Volvo lists 318 litres of open luggage capacity behind the second row and 718 litres with the seats folded, while maximum measured capacity reaches 1,000 litres with the rear seats down. There is also a small seven-litre front cargo area. Maximum trailer weight is up to 1,600kg for both listed powertrains, an unusually useful figure for a vehicle of this size.

The Australian EX30 range includes Plus and Ultra equipment levels. Volvo highlights adaptive cruise control and a power tailgate on Plus, while Ultra adds features such as a panoramic roof, Park Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera with 3D view. Equipment availability varies with model year and configuration. The cabin follows Volvo's simplified design philosophy, placing many functions in the central display rather than using a traditional instrument cluster directly in front of the driver.

For Australian buyers, the EX30 works particularly well as an urban EV that can still handle longer journeys. The rear-drive version provides the best advertised range, while the AWD model delivers sports-car-like acceleration and additional traction. Its compact dimensions inevitably limit rear passenger and luggage space compared with the EX40, and drivers who prefer conventional physical controls may need time to adapt to the minimalist interface. Even so, its combination of range, charging speed, towing capacity and performance makes the EX30 unusually capable for a small electric SUV.
