The Fiat 500e is the fully electric interpretation of Fiat’s famous city car and is officially sold in Australia as a compact battery-electric hatchback. It retains the rounded proportions and recognisable design themes associated with the 500 but is based around an electric drivetrain and a more modern technology package. Fiat Australia positions it as an urban EV for buyers who want zero tailpipe emissions, easy manoeuvrability and a premium-feeling small-car experience rather than the space of a larger electric SUV.
Official Australian specifications list front-wheel drive, a single-speed automatic drivetrain and maximum power of 87 kW. Fiat quotes a WLTP combined driving range of up to 311 km and certified combined energy consumption of 144 Wh/km. As with every electric vehicle, actual range varies with speed, weather, road conditions, climate-control use, driving style and battery condition, but the official figure gives buyers a useful basis for comparison with other compact EVs.
Charging flexibility is central to the 500e’s everyday usability. Fiat Australia states that the vehicle comes with an 11 kW Mode 3 charging cable, which can be stored beneath the luggage-compartment floor. DC fast charging is supported at a maximum rate of 85 kW, with Fiat quoting up to 80 percent charge in around 35 minutes when a suitable charger and conditions are available. Regenerative braking also recovers energy when the driver lifts off the accelerator, helping return otherwise wasted kinetic energy to the battery.
The cabin moves well beyond the older petrol 500 in connectivity and driver assistance. A 10.25-inch Uconnect touchscreen with DAB+ works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a six-speaker audio system handles entertainment. Keyless functionality and a modern digital interface add convenience. The 500e’s compact exterior remains useful in Australian cities: Fiat lists a length of 3,631 mm, width of 1,683 mm with mirrors closed and height of 1,529 mm.
Fiat Australia also promotes a strong group of active-safety systems for the 500e. Autonomous emergency braking can respond to vehicles and vulnerable road users ahead, lane-keep assistance can intervene when the car unintentionally leaves its lane, and adaptive cruise control adjusts speed in response to traffic.
